ADHD in students and stigma

There are an increased number of diagnoses of ADHD (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), yet not many studies have investigated how a diagnosis may affect a student in school. This study by Metzger and Hamilton (2020) investigated if teachers treat students with ADHD differently than their peers without an ADHD diagnosis. Unfortunately, results indicated that teachers were more likely to rate ADHD students as “performing below grade level” (Metzger & Hamilton, 2020) even if they are really performing above grade level. As such, a diagnosis of ADHD may be both helpful and harmful - it can allow students with ADHD to receive the extra support they may need in school, but may cause teachers to hold negative stereotypes towards them.
