Assortative mating in US compared to European parents with bipolar disorder

Researchers analyze the associations between US and European parents and implications for psychiatric illness in children with parents who have a mental disorder (Post et al., 2020).


This study shows data on illness in the spouse and parents of those who have bipolar disorder as they affect illness in children. A history of psychiatric illness was composed for the parent’s, spouse and children of 968 patients with bipolar disorder. Results were compared for spouse and parents from the US and the Netherlands/Germany and related to illnesses in the children. There was more illness in both the spouse and patients’ parents in the US compared to Europe. In the US patients, assortative mating for mood disorder was more associated with depression, bipolar disorder, alcohol and other illnesses in the children. Furthermore, there were more assortative mating for mood and other disorders in two generations of those from the US compared to those from Europe.
