Correlation between childhood trauma, parental bonding, and antisocial personality disorder

Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) typically occurs in childhood or adolescence and is characterized by a person who consistently violates the rights of others and often fails to understand moral decision making. Symptoms include lying, manipulation, violence towards others, irresponsibly, and a general lack of remorse for one’s actions. Traditional analysis and a machine learning approach are used in this study to analyze a correlation between childhood trauma, parental bonding, and antisocial personality disorder.

The study sample consists of 346 adult male cocaine users. Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), and Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) are applied in the study. The CTQ evaluates childhood trauma, the MINI tests for 17 DSM-5 Axis 1 disorders including ASPD, and the PBI assesses a subject’s perception of their parents before 16 years of age. In particular, the PBI focusses on assessing an individual’s experience of two aspects of parental behaviour: care and overprotection. CTQ and PBI are also incorporated into a machine learning model using an elastic net regularization algorithm in order to predict the likelihood of ASPD in individuals.

Out of the sample, it is found that 20.2% of individuals meet the criteria for ASPD. The machine learning model allows for multiple methods of data evaluation, resulting in more thorough evaluation of the sample population. In analyzing instances of trauma in individuals involved in the study, a strong relationship between ASPD and emotional and physical abuse is found. This is consistent with existing literature in related studies. In addition, the influence of parental bonding on ASPD prevalence comes mainly from paternal relationships; this supports the often underestimated influence of the father’s role in personality development.
