Effectiveness of simulation in addressing stigma

Mental health and psychiatric illness stigma hinder quality care in the field of nursing. This study examines if simulation was effective in students’ ideas and attitudes of stigma in nursing education (Varaich, 2020). Eighty-nine undergraduate students participated in either a chronic health challenge scenario or a mental health scenario, after the test, Day’s Mental Illness Stigma Scale was used to measure their post-test stigmatized perceptions. The data showed that students who participated in the mental health scenario displayed more stigmatizing attitudes overall except related to the scale for anxiety toward mental illness, which the control group showed more stigmatizing attitudes. The authors conclude that further research needs to be done to analyze the effectiveness or need to modify scenarios to address mental health stigma (Varaich, 2020).
