There is a documented link between psychiatric disorders and epilepsy. Those with epilepsy are at a higher risk for psychiatric illnesses as well as their family members. They may also experience psychiatric side effects because of the drugs they take to control their epilepsy (AEDs). Researchers have found it surprisingly difficult to find a shared genetic link between epilepsy and psychiatric illness. The authors discuss the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities in epilepsy and the advances in genetic research. They also discuss the extent of the current knowledge of the genetic overlap between these two issues.
