"FOMO" and compulsive social media use as mediators between OCD symptoms and social media fatigue

This study explores the tendency for individuals with obsessive–compulsive disorder symptoms to experience greater social media fatigue via fear of missing out and compulsive social media use.


This study explores the tendency for individuals with obsessive–compulsive disorder symptoms to experience greater social media fatigue via fear of missing out and compulsive social media use. They conducted 2 study’s, one included 339 participants who completed the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory—Revised, the Bergen Social Networking Addiction Scale, and a social media fatigue measure. Study 2 included 260 participants who completed the previously mentioned measures as well as the Fear of Missing Out scale. The researchers concluded individuals with higher levels of obsessive–compulsive disorder symptoms experienced greater fear of missing out, which predicted compulsive social media use, which predicted social media fatigue.
