Redfish Healing Centre is a new 105-bed inpatient psychiatric facility in Coquitlam, B.C. Run by the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), the centre treats individuals with concurrent mental health and substance use disorders, and the facility is equipped to treat individuals with histories of aggressive behaviour, homelessness, suicidality, and cognitive impairments. The centre has four units: assessment and stabilization; enhanced care; regular treatment; and the enriched treatment. Patients are admitted to different units based on similar needs which allows specialized care to be delivered more efficiently.
Redfish Centre aims to support patients to recover from their psychiatric and substance use challenges while working towards discharge to community-based treatment. The centre employs a person-centered, strengths-based, and trauma-informed care model. These approaches give individuals the supports they need to achieve and maintain recovery while focusing on the whole person beyond diagnoses and trauma histories. The facility itself was built to emphasize both community on the unit and privacy by creating warm shared spaces, as well as private bedrooms and treatment rooms. To pay respects to the traditional lands of the səmiq̓ʷəʔelə (Coquitlam) peoples, the building uses Indigenous treatment elements as well as art to create a calming and welcoming space for all cultures.
