Nurses need support during Covid-19 pandemic

Occupational stress has long been associated with nursing staff. This article focusses on those employed in mental health nursing roles and the necessity of emotional support in place of Schwartz Rounds, which have been prevented due to social distancing measures during the Covid-19 pandemic. Schwartz Rounds are interdisciplinary meetings that allow healthcare staff to come together to discuss challenges in the workplace; these forums are designed to reduce burnout and promote compassion among caregivers.

In place of these important meetings, Schwartz Rounds facilitators in the United Kingdom developed online “wobble rooms”: regularly scheduled meetings held using videoconferencing, to which staff can self-refer. The goal of the wobble rooms is to allow a safe space for staff who may be struggling with the added stress of providing care through a pandemic. A major benefit of the wobble rooms is that staff can receive instant psychological support. These sessions are ongoing and subject to adaptation; a formal evaluation of their effectiveness is currently being conducted.
