Stigma is an extensive social structure that has many negative effects for those living with a mental illness and for those who have a loved one with a mental illness. The authors of this article analyze evidence on the concept of stigma and stigma-related outcomes reported by parents and the children who live with parents who have mental illness (Reupert et al., 2020). They used the PRISMA integrative review method. They found that, for mental illness in parents, stigma intersected with stigma related to perceived violations of social and cultural rules relating to parenting. For children, the research showed stigma resulted in bullying, social isolation and an effort to hide their parent’s mental illness. Stigma stopped children and parents from accessing supports. The authors stated public policies and campaigns that focus on promoting open speaking about mental illness are unlikely to be effective without addressing the impacts of stigma.
